May 2026 – Professor Simon Cherry Elected Fellow of the Royal Society

The EXPLORER Molecular Imaging Center is proud to celebrate a landmark achievement: Professor Simon R. Cherry has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), one of the most prestigious scientific honors in the world. The announcement was made on May 27, with only 90 scientists across the globe receiving the honor this year.

Founded more than 360 years ago, the Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship made up of many of the world's most eminent scientists, engineers, and technologists — a community whose past members include Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Election to Fellow is recognition reserved for those who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of science. 

The Royal Society elected Cherry in recognition of his seminal contributions to biomedical imaging. Cherry has transformed imaging science across a more than 35-year career, including co-leading the development of EXPLORER, the world's first total-body PET scanner, alongside Professor Ramsey Badawi, a technology that has reshaped biomedical research and clinical medicine by enabling unparalleled insights into healthy and disease states in the human body. Cherry’s broader body of work spans detector and system development, PET/MRI hybrid imaging, Cerenkov radiation imaging, and quantitative analysis methods, with applications ranging from cancer and neurology to infectious disease and metabolism.

"I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition from one of the world's most prestigious and famous scientific institutions," Cherry said. "I feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful career, doing things that I love and surrounded by so many bright and generous people."
